Castlereagh Column: Roos run rampant over Roosters

Bryson Luff

It was all one-way traffic at Coolah’s Bowen Oval last Saturday in the Boronia Cup Challenge game between the Coolah Kangaroos and the Cobar Roosters in what was a replay of the 2024 grand final.

Last year in the grand final, which was played at Cobar, the ‘Roos proved to be too strong and came away with the premiership and they again flexed their muscles this time around, scoring ten tries to romp home with a big 52 to six victory to signal that they have every intention of going back to back when it comes to the major silverware on offer at the end of the season.

It was not a good day for the Roosters with their league tag team also suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of the Coolah Flyers, the final score being 58 to 10.
Cobar will enjoy their first home game this Saturday when they host the in form Coonabarabran Unicorns at Tom Knight Oval.

The Unicorns made it two wins in a row to start off their 2025 campaign when they saw off a strong challenge from the Warren Bulldogs in the game played at Coonabarabran.

In fact, both teams scored six tries and the final 34 to 26 result came down to goal kicking.

The Warren club had a better result in League Tag with the blue and whites getting up 26-24 with the Warren fullback, Mab Fuller crossing for five tries in what was her club’s first victory in their comeback season to the Castlereagh competition.

Spectators at Narromine’s Cale Oval were treated to two very close games between the Jets and the visiting Dunedoo Swans.

In what was another epic league tag game between the two clubs, the Narromine Jets were able to retain the Jessica Skinner Challenge Cup when they won a nail biter against the Swannettes, the final score being 20 to 18.

That close and exciting game set the scene for what turned out to be an equalling entertaining first grade contest with the Jets once again getting the nod, the winning margin again being two points the score being 26 to 24 with the Jet’s five-eight Corey Cox being a standout for the winners, scoring four tries in an important victory for the club.

At Gulgong the spoils were shared between the host club and the Baradine Magpies, with the Maggies getting up 20-12 in the league tag whilst the Bull Terriers proved to be too strong in first grade, winning 68-6.

The Magpies will be on the road again this Saturday when they venture to Dunedoo to take on the Swans whilst other Saturday games will see Coolah have their first away game for the season when they play Coonamble at Coonamble, Cobar are at home to Coonabarabran and Gilgandra will play Gulgong in league tag at Gilgandra.

Round three will open on Friday night at Narromine with the Jets hosting the Warren Bulldogs, with the league tag game being a Jessica Skinner Challenge Cup game.
