Group 20: Leeton to field remarkable five grades in Grand Final

By Tallon Smith

The Leeton Greenies will make history this weekend when they field teams in all five grades Group 20 Grand Final day, after their First Grade side sealed their place with a 34-14 win over the Griffith Black and Whites in the Preliminary Final at the Darlington Point Sportsground on Sunday.

The First Graders followed the Reserve Graders and League Tag, who also beat the Black and Whites 12-10 and 26-18 in their respective Preliminary Finals, along with their Under 16s who beat TLU 56-14, and their Minor Premier Under 18s advanced a week ago in the Major Semi, in all advancing to Sunday’s Grand Finals in Griffith.

Leeton Secretary Deearne McGregor described the achievement as “absolutely massive” for the club, who are seeking to defend four of those titles on the weekend.

“We thought that last year was good, getting four teams in [and winning them],” she said.

“It just sums up the whole vibe of the club, it’s been a great year.

“The whole feeling around the club is amazing, we have such a tiny group of volunteers.”

Speaking on the weekend’s First Grade match, McGregor said that although the game was “really close” for the majority of the encounter she never thought the side would lose the match.

“We never once feared we were going to lose it,” she said.

“The way Hayden and the boys played, they were on fire.

“After half time we came out and blew them away.”

The win sets up a mouth-watering rematch of last year’s Grand Final against the Darlington Point-Coleambally Roosters, who had the week off after winning the Major Semi Final over the Black and Whites last weekend.

Despite being the defending premiers, McGregor believes that the Greenies go in as underdogs against the star-studded Roosters, in their attempt to go back-to-back for the first time since 1933-34 when the club was in Group 9.

“The mind frame we are going in with is that we are underdogs,” she said.

“We know they’re the favourites on paper.

“Fingers crossed we can do it on the day.”

Meanwhile, in the other grades, Leeton will aim to secure a clean sweep, starting from 9:45am when the Under 16s face the Griffith Black and Whites.

After that, the Under 18s will also tackle the Black and Whites, followed by League Tag taking on the undefeated West Wyalong side, and the Reserve Grade Grand Final against Yenda.

The First Grade match kicks off at 3:15pm, with all matches held at the “Dog Ground” EW Moore Oval in Griffith.
