Griffith Waratahs sign Willie Lolohea as First Grade Coach for 2024 return: Q&A

The Griffith Waratahs Tigers have announced that Willie Lolohea will be the head coach of their First Grade team in their return to the field from recess in 2024.

The local star will lead the team as they tackle the difficult challenge of rebuilding head-on, as Group 20 itself looks to continue its rebuild heading into the off-season.

Read this Q&A to get to know the man in charge of the ‘Tahs top 17 a little better ahead of their return next season.

What does it mean to be announced as the Waratah Tigers Coach for 2024?

“I am extremely excited to be a part of the rebuilding of the Waratah Tigers, a club with so much history and prestige, [and] a club I’ve had the honour of winning premierships with, led by master coach Kose Lelei.”

What are your credentials to this point in your career, both within rugby league and the broader world?

“I have represented Group 20 & Riverina, whilst also studying a bachelors in teaching (6 months to go) and currently have a bachelor in criminal justice.

“I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge through coaches like Michael Mogliotti, Tom Sellars, Kose Lelei, Lance Poka. So applying these skills within a new cohort is going to be very exciting. I don’t doubt there will be challenges, but as they arise, the well abled Tahs coaching staff will effectively assess and address appropriately, creating a more cohesive and family oriented club.

“I am goal driven and focused on skill and character development.”

Tell us a bit about yourself.

“I’m a devoted Christian, Glory to God. I have a family of 5, Sofia Lolohea, Cohen Lolohea, Nikita Lolohea (Wife), Peppa Lolohea (ragdoll cat) and Bron Lolohea (staffy). My main focus is to ensure my family is provided for and maintain a roof over their heads, whilst ensuring they’re in a safe space to develop and reach their potential. This mentality of family will be our driving force within the development of our club culture. “

What’s your final message ahead of 2023?

“If you’re interested in joining the new development of club culture, please feel free to contact the Waratahs President, Robert [Nascimben] and or myself, [we’re] always down for a chat.”
